Microsoft® Office
Case Study
for Windows® 95
[pic]
Overview of the Business Value Analysis for Microsoft Office 95
Software is designed to help people and organizations work more effectively
and productivity. In particular, Microsoft® Office for Windows® 95 is
designed to help users quickly and easily get their job done. While
Microsoft might outline the significant benefits of Office 95, the most
meaningful evaluation of Microsoft Office is done often outside of
Microsoft by customers and analysts. This document is designed to provide a
brief summary of some of the studies and in depth research which have been
done with Microsoft Office for Windows 95. More in depth discussion and
details of the study can be obtained separately from each of the research
organizations.
Productivity Study: Microsoft Office 4.3 vs. Office 95
Kelly Services, the nationΓÇÖs leading provider of temporary employee
services based out of Troy, Michigan, conducted a usability study with 35
current Office 4.3 users to measure productivity, learning curve and user
preference. Kelly designed test of tasks commonly encountered in day to day
software (creating & editing documents; analyzing data; finding, opening &
saving documents). Users were benchmarked using Office 4.3 with Microsoft
Windows 3.1. Following the benchmark, subjects were given approximately 45
minutes to complete the Office Guided Tour with Office 95 running with
Windows 95. Finally, subjects were benchmarked again using Office 95 with
Windows 95. Each user then completed an exit questionnaire.
Key Findings
ΓÇó Users were 37% more productive with Office 95, measured in task
completion times.
ΓÇó Users were 36% more accurate in completing tasks correctly.
ΓÇó 86% of users wanted to upgrade, citing product performance, quality and
usefulness of on-line help and application consistency as key reasons.
ΓÇó 70% of users said they could effectively use Office 95 without additional
formal training.
Microsoft Office 95 Impact on the Helpdesk
Workgroup Technologies, a market research firm which specializes in
personal computers, operating systems and application development markets
and is based in Hampton, New Hampshire, collected and analyzed helpdesk
logs of 12 Fortune 100 companies representing over 100,000 PCs and 1.5
million helpdesk calls.
Key Findings
ΓÇó Organizations should see, in a steady state environment, a 44% reduction
of all Microsoft Office application related help calls which translates
into a 3-7% reduction of all helpdesk calls, on average.
ΓÇó The Answer Wizard successfully answered between 70%-85% (dependent on
application) of usersΓÇÖ application questions.
ΓÇó In an average site (8733 PCs) Office 95 has the potential to eliminate
414 calls per month and 123 site visits per month. This translates to
potential savings of over $542,000/per year or $62 per user.
IDC Cost & Value to Use Microsoft Office 95 Study
International Data Corporation (Framingham, MA), a leading consulting firm
in personal computers markets, built a model that estimates the returns on
investment of deploying Office 95 for large organizations (1000 PCs) and
small to medium organizations (100 PCs). The model was constructed from IDC
cost to use data, primary research done with Office 95 beta sites and
participation in the Kelly Services productivity study.
Key findings

Training & Learning Study: Microsoft Office 95
Masie Institute (Cambridge, MA), a recognized software training center and
technology think-tank that specializes in the development of training
methodologies for corporate training departments worldwide, evaluated
Office 95ΓÇÖs impact on training organizations by evaluating the product and
interviewing more than 40 training professionals who participated in the
Office 95 and Windows 95 beta programs.
Key Findings
ΓÇó Existing users do not need formal classroom training to be effective with
Office 95 applications. The tightly integrated user interface of Office
for Windows 95 allows users to transfer their existing knowledge from
previous versions of Office applications and leverage their product
knowledge of one application throughout the entire Microsoft Office suite.
ΓÇó A series of enhancements like screen tips, the Answer Wizard and right
mouse clicks, will help Office users discover and use more of the features
of Office 95.
ΓÇó Deploying Office 95 with Windows 95 will help users learn the Windows 95
interface more quickly.
ΓÇó The focus of training can now begin to shift from a keystroke training
“press this key and then press this key…” to presenting strategies for
completing specific work tasks.
ΓÇó To ensure users have base level of competency with the entire suite of
applications, the MASIE Institute recommends the following types of
training and estimates the amount of training time to migrate users to the
Office 95 suite:
|Type of User |Type of training |Hours |
| |
|Office 4.3 user |Initial |3 |
| |briefing/demo (1hr) | |
